Considering the mission statement of CIDESD, focused in developing human resources, capable of handling autonomous interventions under the domains of sports sciences, health and human development, we propose the extension of two (2) of its research communities to the CIDESD-EUROPEIA Hub, with the inclusion of UE researchers and a widening of the scope.
The thematic line of research in Well-being and Human development implements the structuring of interdisciplinarity, combining a perspective of improving the human condition via physical exercise, integrating the sciences of sport and sports management, with psychology, both in its organizational aspect and in a facet of team management, but also in a markedly clinical way, with regard to the psychological management of sports performance. On the other hand, this line of research will also focus on emerging themes, such as the role of technology in improving athletes' performance in high-level competitions, considering psychological and sport management factors.
Human performance is generally seen as a fixed measure of performance in a given activity. At CIDESD- EUROPEIA Research Hub, we aim to obtain a much more holistic vision, where we will integrate the various psychological and biomechanical facets that can contribute to cohesively improving work performance (through the individual's internal tools), social performance, performance as a Human being, structuring from a perspective of reconciling professional, family, social and personal aspects. Area of particular interest is high sporting performance, especially in young university students. Here, psychology and sports and health sciences will be predominant in responding to these challenges.
In this context, the Strong research Community Hub at UE will count with a vision gathering expertise in Bullying in sports, games, children's motor skills and sport, Athlete Welfare (M. Nery), Biomechanics, kinetic and kinematic description of gait (L. Aguiar), health and its relationship with physical exercise, especially in chronic conditions and in athletes (F. Raposo).
We have a broader interpretation of the term Human Development that goes beyond the developmental biology assessment, in which we envision increased levels of well-being, personal (physical and mental) and societal (through health education, trending healthier lifestyles).
The expertise that we can bring on obesity (S. Martins, L. Aguiar & P. Vieira) & nutrition (S. Martins & P. Vieira), behavioral change (P. Vieira, A. Q. Martins & T. Santos), human motivation and motivational strategies (P. Vieira & F. Raposo), impact of grief and chronic illness on human development (P Ferrajão), Trauma - Neurobiology of trauma (L. Roque) or psychotraumatology (P. Ferrajão), resilience, self-regulation, social support (T. Santos) or Elder abuse/neglect (J. Soares), will be a perfect complement for the Geron research Community Hub at UE.
Our partnerships are key to accomplish the proposed research plan. Among the most relevant partner stake holder, we highlight the following:
All these partnerships are in place both for research as well as for teaching purposes.
We at UE provide a solid and highly innovative teaching path for our students, through a proven and praised Challenge-based learning. Up to the moment we have 59 completed 59 MSc thesis supervisions, with several ongoing, and 1 completed PhD thesis supervision (M. Nery), with 1 ongoing.
On the other hand, our researchers have been involved in several national and international projects (both as PI’s or team members). Particular expertise in Erasmus+ projects has been acquired, as well as with La Caixa, Santander and in privately funded research.
Furthermore, we currently have in place a competitive research project leveraging scheme, in which we have a small budget (up to € 5k) for short projects (12 months) that can be further exploited. We envision that this scheme will continue throughout the CIDESD-UE hub. In addition, the currently approved projects (starting the fall 2023) may already be developed within the collaborative effort of CIDESD-UE.
In this sense we see a high compatibility between the interests of UE and CIDESD, and strongly believe that effort combination will create the required synergies to leverage the consortium to at least a “Very-good” Mark on the evaluation by FCT.
